CHAPTER TWELVE
Itâs Ameliaâs turn to host girlsâ night. Sometimes we go to a movie, or out to dinner, and other times itâs nice to hang out in our sweatpants at one of our homes. Ameliaâs studio apartment is small and suits her perfectly.
Nestled above her coffee shop, it always smells of coffee beans and cinnamon, and is one of my favorite places to relax. She has it decorated with warm colors and an eclectic mix of mismatched chairs and rugs. It has a Friends vibe, which Iâm pretty sure is what she was going for.
âYou must be so happy to have your brother home, Meels.â Evie scoops up a load of queso on her tortilla chip, and I do the same.
Amelia takes a sip of her strawberry margarita. âI havenât seen him much since he moved into Marleyâs.â
âHe hasnât moved in. Heâs staying in a guest room until he finds an apartment. Itâs temporary.â
âMust be difficult having such a hunk of a man staying at the inn. I hear heâs been joining you for morning scones and youâve had a few date night dinners,â Evie says with a devilish smirk.
âItâs not like that.â I stuff my face with more chips.
âYou sure my brother doesnât think that? He talks about you a lot. I think he likes you. Canât go wrong with Ash. Heâs a good guy.â
âI like him too. As a friend.â There isnât anything wrong with Ashton. Evie and Amelia are right. Ashton is an extremely good-looking man, and heâs super sweet. I want to be more attracted to him, but there isnât a pull between us. Thereâs a friendly connection, but the butterflies donât flutter, and I donât stumble over my words when Iâm with him like when Iâm near Blaine.
Wait. What? Iâve never actually admitted to those feelings before, even if just in my head. Yeah, thereâs some serious chemistry between Blaine and me but itâs because we argue all the time.
Right?
I chomp on my chips and pick up my margarita glass, hiding behind it so my best friends donât call me out on my feelings.
âIf he asked you out on a real date, what would you say?â Evie waves a chip in my direction.
âJust because youâve settled down and are happy in love doesnât mean Amelia and I are on the hunt for a husband.â
âOh, I know Meels isnât. Sheâs fiercely independent. You, on the other hand, are quite ready to settle down.â
âI am not.â
âWhy so defensive, Mars? Itâs not a bad thing, just like me being independent and one hundred percent happy being alone isnât bad.â
âIâm not on the prowl for a husband.â
The strawberry margarita goes down easily. Too easily. If I continue slurping so fast, Iâll get a buzz and wonât be able to drive home. Knowing my matchmaker friends, theyâd use it to their advantage and call Ashton to pick me up. Which he would. I pick up my water bottle and tuck my legs under me while I settle back into the couch.
